Can I Record Sound?

One of our most commonly asked questions regarding our security equipment is “Does this camera have audio?” or “Can I record Sound?” and unfortunately, the answer is typically “no”. Due to stipulations and privacy laws in today’s society there is a very delicate line drawn as to when it is permitted and acceptable to be able to capture both audio and video, especially in a discreet manner.

The general rule of thumb when it comes to covert audio/video recording is that “At least one (or all) parties present at the time of the recording needs to be aware that a recording is taking place”. Privacy laws vary from state to state and since purchasing online allows for individuals from across the country and around the world to place orders, it is in the best interest of the consumer to take the necessary precautions to protect you from unknowingly breaking the law.

With smartphone capabilities today, you can easily argue that anyone with an iPhone can take a video that features both audio and video and while this is true, it would still technically fall under the guidelines as permissible use. Similarly, a standard handheld video camera’s sole purpose is to be able to record audio and video, but it is not discreet or hidden. For the purposes of Hidden Cameras being left to monitor your home or office while you are away, video is all that is allowed to be filmed and recorded.

We do feature several smaller, body-worn devices which state that they record both audio and video. With those items, like a cell phone video, the user needs to physically press record at the time of capturing any footage. Therefore, it would still qualify as one person being aware the recording is taking place.
